  • Maria Martins

I'm a traveler, portraitist, and a lover of nature and all its mysteries. For 30 years I have helped create magical moments for families through fine art portraiture. I look forward to continuing my work by helping you capture your next timeless portrait!

Asheville | Avalon | West Palm

He picked up a feather, soft and gray in his small hand, and ran it across his face. A gift from the beach, a small token of gentleness from nature amidst crashing waves and fast, salty winds. A moment of serenity. Feeling the bristles against his skin, tickling his cheeks and nose, soothed him. Calmness came over the shore, a body at rest, the feather floating across the contours of his face like driftwood. Above him a bird glided through the sky, silky smooth and gray like his feather. And then like a burst of wind he was gone.

It takes a certain amount of skill to artfully capture the soul of a child. “Soul” can be a complicated word, but it’s through the 25+ years of professionally working with children that allows Maria Martins to simply bring out the pure identity of the child she photographs. This element of her work is one of the most sacred in her creative process. Being true to who the child is crucial to successful children’s portraiture. This is how the magical moments are revealed.

Fearing that your child won’t cooperate during a photo session with Maria when you’ve invested time and money with her is understandable. But it doesn’t need to hold you back, create more anxiety, or make you feel shame. Your child is inspiring just as they are, no matter what the fears, anxiety, or the ignorance of others have lead you to believe. We are here just to follow him/her. Simply to be there for that moment when their imagination takes off and they catch the wind current that allows them to soar with the birds.

There are no guidlines for how a session should go, there’s nothing your child needs to do. Smiling isn’t even necessary if that’s not who your child is or how they authentically feel that day. The only rubric that exists is for us, the photographer and the parent. We are there to entertain, to give them something to play with, comfort them, let them enjoy, and just be present for those special moments. That is what children’s portraiture is about, capturing the magical moments. We’re just setting the stage for them.

When a child has a special need, casually saying that everything is going to run smoothly and be just fine may cause some parent’s eyes to roll. Ignoring that a child has a particular need that must be met is a serious failure. After working with children who have ASDs (Autism Spectrum Disorders), we believe that each child has that same love, light, and imagination inside of them and it’s our job to create the safe space that fits their unique needs in order for them to share that. A child may not behave, react, or perceive like “everyone else” but those special moments will still be captured. Seeing the beautiful imagination and heart within them occurs when they are themselves, in whatever expression is natural to them. We will follow their lead.

If you have any questions or comments please don’t hesitate to share. I’d love to hear about your experiences with photographers, good or bad, or your own experience photographing your child. We are absolutely open to learning more about ASDs and understanding how we can help you get the best session possible for your child.
Thank you for reading.

The holiday season has become just about the craziest time of year. In more ways than one. Sometimes I find it difficult to see the joy in it when people are scrambling around for gifts, getting caught in the frenzy of thoughtless consuming, and forgetting the reason why we all loved this time of year so much in the first place.

We love it because it’s a season of, well… love. Family, friends, neighbours, strangers, humanity, we all take the time to slow down and wish each other good health, prosperity, peace, and happiness. For a little while we acknowledge the common thread that binds us all together, we can really gives thanks for having people we love nearby.

The gift of family portraiture isn’t simply a physical present to hand to someone. It’s the experience of bringing the family together for a session, co-creating the portrait together and bringing the essence of the family into each photograph. It’s the memories of those loved ones you can keep with you, whether as framed art or as a little reminder everytime you open your wallet.

Really enjoy that special time of year by planning ahead and getting your gifts early! Sleigh bells will be ringing in the barn all season. BYOR (Bring Your Own Reindeer).

Senior year finds you suspended between two worlds: Adolescence and Adulthood. You are here, forming this identity and exploring your boundaries, and understanding the responsibility of growing up. This is a time to really plunge into yourself and uncover who you are.

High school students from all over South Jersey come through Unique Image Photography LLC studios to get the best custom graduation portraits, portraits that expertly express their evolving individuality. As artists we understand the desire to express, and support our clients as they play freely with the creative process of becoming who they are. We try to provide the most compassionate, safe space to help cultivate the person you are becoming.

When we make the transition to adulthood, it often happens that we have less time to sit with ourselves and really examine the question: Who Am I? Life gets busy. We often wish we had the freedom of adolescence to explore who we are. Senior year is unique for this reason. You have a mature awareness coupled with the free time of adolescence, making a perfect scenario for growth.

And guess what, Seniors! College will be four years of this in-between state. You are going to be doing so much growing in the next few years, many of you won’t even recognize the person in your high school year book photo. And this is where we come in: Document this change artfully with portraiture to admire how much you’ve grown. The changes will be dramatic .

What defines you is not the outcome, but the process that got you there. Keep exploring, never be satisfied with being “finished”, push those boundaries, and above all enjoy this time.

We’re so proud of you. Good luck!
